Why do I receive the following or a similar Error message when sending email using my email client?

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.your-domain.com', Server: 'mail.your-domain.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Issue

Many ISP's (Internet Service Providers) are blocking what is called "Port 25" which is the port used to send e-mail. They have chosen to do this to cut down on the amount of "SPAM" mail that is sent through their network, this is out of our control. All e-mail sent via the Internet is routed through the port 25, the channel used for communication between a mail client and a mail server. Even though port 25 blocking will probably become an industry standard, however, the filter can create problems for e-mail servers and block legitimate e-mail as well as spam. You can check with your ISP to see if they are doing this.

Cox, Verizon, Earthlink, NetZero, Mindspring, MSN, Flashnet, MediaOne, AT&T, Bell, etc. now required that their subscribers use their Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) in order to send mail from a mail client (e.g. Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape, etc.).

Solution

1. You will need to use your ISP's Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) rather than mail.your-domain.com. If you do not know what your ISP's Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) setting is please contact them directly. If you continue to have difficulties sending mail even after updating your Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) setting to your ISPs, please contact them directly.

2. Use your Web Mail control panel included with your hosting located at http://mail.your-domain.com which is not affected by your ISP's email policies.

3. Find another ISP that does not block or filter port 25. Many smaller ISPs do not block or filter port 25.
